Road priorities

The City monitors weather from October 1 through April 30. After precipitation stops, published road targets are four hours for main roads, six for collector roads and bus routes, and sixteen for local residential roads.

Crews may make several main-road passes before reaching neighbourhood streets. A target is not a promise that every road will be bare pavement at an exact time.

Sidewalks and exceptional weather

Normal-condition targets are 24 hours for high-volume sidewalks and 48 for residential sidewalks. The Snowplow Tracker frequently updates active clearing and completed roads.

A declared significant weather event means an expected or active hazard poses a substantial road-user threat. The City posts declarations on its site and social channels. Service levels may not be reached until the weather passes and crews catch up.

Share space with plows

Stay at least three car lengths behind a plow, do not pass it or drive alongside, and give oncoming plows room. A line of plows on a multilane road needs the same patience.

Pedestrians should move into a visible location instead of assuming the operator has seen them. Keep children away from roadside snowbanks and stopped plows. Read the separate winter parking rules; a clearing target is not permission to leave a car where a ban applies.
